Topspin and Undercut at UCLA
Many underprivileged children do not get the same experiences with sports and music as children whose parents could monetarily provide for summer camps or after school activities that revolve around volleyball, softball, tennis, or music. This becomes a disadvantage for children of poorer families when they start high school and have to compete for spots in sports teams, choir, or band. Specifically with sports, children with less exposure when they were younger will less likely want to play sports or do outdoor activities when they are older because they feel less comfortable with doing something new, which can be a psychological factor contributing to childhood obesity. Our organization wants to change this by working with underprivileged middle school students after school specifically to provide a free sports activity. Since we are a new club, we will train the children in tennis, since this is the sport we are most familiar with. Once we are more established, we may try other sports to train the students. We believe that by promoting a positive outlook on sports and outdoor activities, we can get these kids to really enjoy exercising and playing sports in the present and for the future.
