Humans in North Korea (HNK) at UCLA

Humans in North Korea (HNK) is a social-science research and practice group at educational institutions, such as UCLA. HNK stands for human rights advocacy for the North Korean defectors in the United States and educates Korean and non-Korean people about global citizenship through the complex identities and socio-political history of the Korean heritage. HNK members will actively engage in developing public forums to disperse the idea of freedom in undemocratic nations. HNK members will have the opportunity to study the society and politics of North Korea, South Korea, and their international relationships with surrounding countries, such as the United States of America, China, Japan, and Russia. Volunteering and collaborating with North Korean defector shelters in Los Angeles and non-profit institutions at large, HNK contributes cultural and communal activities to engage with the North Korean defectors. HNK will organize activities such as home cooking, painting and drawing workshop, creative designed objects workshop, and various tours observing museums, Los Angeles neighborhoods, cultural centers, and public sculptures.  HNK envisions formalizing these experiences and studies in various public platforms, such as symposia, lecture series, roundtable discussions, and exhibitions.
