La Familia de UCLA
La Familia de UCLA (LaFa) is a cultural, social, political and advocacy group who has been the face of UCLA's Joteria for the past decade. LaFa exists because our experiences as Latinxs combined with our historical and continued struggles gives rise to particular needs and interests that require a different framework of analysis than that of the mainstream queer community. Recognizing the issues of religion and heterosexism in the Latin@ community, LaFa demands a safe space of its own to explore, support and educate ourselves and others in imperative issues that affect us simultaneously. LaFa commits itself to self-determination, self-respect, and dignity. In the past decade, we have fought to ensure cultural preservation, community activism and empowerment, community service, and unrestrained self-expression. Our alumni range from writers and performers, to lawyers and leaders in the non- profit sector, dealing with both queer and Latin@ issues. In our years of existence, we have hosted eleven Queer Latin@ Youth Conferences (QLYC), co-programed with various Latin@ organizations to produced such programs as the Coming Out as Queer and Undocumented panel with IDEAS at UCLA, educated sororities and fraternities when it comes to queer issues through such things as Queer Skits with Lamda Theta Alpha Inc., and united our members through our yearly retreats and outings. Please feel free to come by the LGBT center on Thursday from 7-8 pm to meet some of the most amazing Joteria and be part of this memorable familia.
