Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program (KDSAP)
The Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness program is articulated around two objectives, student career development and community outreach. The KDSAP focuses on educating the community and its members on various kidney diseases and their effects on one's body. The KDSAP is effective in its community outreach because it invites guest speakers to come, speak, and educate the individuals of a community and the members of KDSAP regarding kidney diseases and preventive measures to lead a healthy life. The KDSAP also provides its members, who may be interested in the healthcare profession, an opportunity to have hands-on experience with its unique community kidney disease detection program (CKDD). The CKDD is a program of this club, which allows the club to partner with a community hospital and go to select communities and provide free of cost kidney health protection screenings. If I am given the opportunity to start a KDSAP Chapter at UCLA, I believe I can educate and help a lot of people in Los Angeles. Los Angeles has a high poverty rate, and thus, not a lot of people can afford health check ups and tests to stay healthy. Thus, with the CKDD program, we can partner with Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and Santa Monica UCLA Medical center and perform complimentary kidney disease screenings to underserved communities in Los Angeles. The KDSAP is honestly meant for students who have a passion for the medical field, and for those who would like to gain experience in regards to public speaking, medical terms and concepts, etc. Members of the Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program, while educating and helping the public of Los Angeles, can also gain valuable volunteer skills as well as much needed leadership skills. Due to the myriad benefits that the KDSAP will provide to the members of the community, I am confident that a KDSAP chapter will succeed if not thrive at UCLA.
