Bruins Reforming Incarceration Through Education (Restored)

Project BRITE is a non-profit organization housed under UCLA's Community Service Commission (CSC). It is one of two services organizations on UCLA's campus working with Incarcerated youth. However, BRITE is the only service organization on campus to also work with homeless and academically/behaviorally challenged youth; thus, incorporating a preventive sense to it's mission. BRITE aims to reduce recidivism rates and break the school to prison pipeline through education. It accomplishes it's mission both through tutoring and mentoring services. The focus: rehabilitating those who have already fallen through the crack and assist those who are often stigmatized, marginalized, and neglected by mainstream society. Our secondary focus this year is outreach on our campus to inform more students about the issue of mass incarceration. Partnerships with the Los Angeles County of Education, Coalition for Engaged Education, ASPIRE Charter Schools, and School on Wheels have provided us entrance into Camp David Gonzalez, Camp Miller, Central Juvenile Hall, ASPIRE Centennial College Preparatory Academy, and transitional housing complexes. There is a great need and desire for tutors and mentors who will dedicate their time each week to support our students both emotionally and intellectually. You can help us to make that possible! If you are interested in joining us please email us at projectbrite@gmail.com with your full name and year in school. We will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Project BRITE!
